I was starting a freezing cold week in New York for my vacation but when I went to Hartwell it really warmed my soul. I was in Brooklyn because of my grandfather’s 70th birthday. Today we had two surprises for my grandfather. We took him to his old high school that he went to over half a century ago! And we also went to see Jackie Robinson’s gravesite in the cemetery in Brooklyn that he is buried in. It was interesting to see that people had left old baseballs and baseball bats. Do you know who Jackie Robinson is? He was the first African American to play baseball. He was a very important man because he broke the color barrier. My grandfather also really likes sports like me so I thought he would like to go do this.
It took a long time to go to the high school after this and it was 2pm by the time we were done. It was worth it though because I got to see where my grandfather went to school. I also saw his name on the wall because he was one of the best students at his high school. But all of this made me hungry so my mom quickly looked something up on her phone and this is how we found Hartwell.
When we walked in to Hartwell my mom made a statement “Oh! There are no tables!” So you should know this is mostly a take out place. There is one small counter with four seats and we were able to sit there. The guy who got our food was extraorindairly nice. His name was Francis and he was one of the owners. When I left the restaurant I said out loud that it was the best service I ever had. He told me about the history of the restaurant and how his favorite sport is basketball like me too. He told me about all the different countries the food represented. There were things like curry, kidney beans and corn, lentil meatballs, etc etc etc. All of it was vegan and a lot of it was gluten free.
While we were eating I was looking up at the bulletin board on the wall and I recognized that there were two owners of this restaurant and lots of staff members. I recognized Francis’ photo up on the board. I didn’t spend all my time looking around because my tummy was filling up with this vegan yumminess I’m going to show you now:
The way it works for their bowls is you pick a protein plus two sides for the small bowl and more for larger ones. I picked the lentil meatballs for my protein and the rice and greens for my sides. My brother got the lentil meatballs, rice, beans and corn and mixed vegetables. This food was great. I might consider moving to Brooklyn for this restaurant if it weren’t so cold out! Thanks Francis for this unbelievable meal – and i forgot to mention that it was very reasonably priced!
